Respond to…Group norms summarize group influence processes as well as the rules for maintaining who joins and leaves the team. Norms are relevant within a team because they clarify the organization or company’s core values and create a sense of identity for the team. Leadership that enforces team norms help their employees to meet behavioral expectations or avoid behavioral mistakes that aren’t acceptable. It’s argued that norms help the team succeed – and the negative, non-productive norms may be created that stunt the growth and success of an organization. It’s challenging to change norms once the standards are in place (Baack, 2017). Clear communication is an essential element during team or group development to efficiently and effectively be able to follow all the stages of group development. The group development approach, created by Tuckman and Jenson in 1977, offered five stages of the development of a team: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning (Baack, 2017)One example of an error in communication that caused problems for the team that I am a member of was when there were changes that weren’t communicated out. The Company I work for decided to restructure some departments that work closely with our team. The company dissolved one department and created a new team as well as moved responsibilities around to different groups. The communication about the new teams and which team does specific tasks and responsibilities was not communicated out to my team. I would be doing a regular process that I’ve done before only to find out that the team that I directed the client to is now the incorrect team to send them to since the changes. The miscommunication caused a lot of delays in processing requests, and it took a while to figure everything out on our own by asking a million questions since nothing was ever communicated to us formally.
